Here’s something we can all feel good about: Last week Brooklyn Botanic Garden gave away over 200 beautiful, healthy perennials and trees and countless bulbs to dozens of community gardens in Brooklyn, including some of those hardest hit by the recent storms. Twenty-five plants will be going to the Boardwalk Community Garden in Coney Island, which was literally wiped out by Sandy.
With the Discovery Garden slowing down for the season, four Brooklyn Urban Gardener volunteers joined staff from BBG to help GreenBridge Community Garden Alliance members dig up selected plants for transplanting to community gardens this fall. The site will close later this winter, allowing construction to begin on BBG’s expanded Discovery Garden. It’s wonderful to know that its beloved plants are finding new homes with Brooklyn community gardeners who will truly appreciate them. What a terrific opportunity to help make our bruised borough a little greener next year!
